Selecting an Uninterruptible Power Supply For Hospitals

Hospitals whether public or private sector are required to provide security of supply, flexibility and operation as laid down in the Department of Health - Health Technical Memorandum 2007 - Electrical Services Supply and Distribution (1993). Riello UPS protect many hospital areas including operating theatres, preparation and intensive care rooms with its uninterruptible power supplies.

Operating Theatre and Post Operative Recovery Rooms

Hospital operations are typically protected by local standby power generators should a mains failure occur. Critical systems may be UPS protected where there are on-site power quality issues or the need to ensure power whilst a generator starts on mains failure. In addition the UPS battery pack is typically sized to allow the powering up of on-site generators and/or sufficient time to allow the medical procedure to be safely finished.

There is only one type of UPS technology to select for such applications - on-line. This is because an on-line UPS can fail safely to mains if it is overloaded or develops a fault condition. For additional resilience N+1 redundancy should be considered. N+1 redundancy provides an additional UPS or in parallel operation additional kVA capacity between the systems so that should one UPS fail the other(s) can safely continue to support the load.

N+1 redundancy operation can be achieved in two ways. Firstly the UPS range itself such as the Multi Dialog UPS may be capable of such operation. The Multi Dialog has been designed to allow operation of up to 8 modules even of different power ratings in an N+1 configuration. Smaller on-line systems such as the Dialog Plus or Dialog Dual are not capable of such operation but they can be installed with a MultiSwitch.

MultiSwitch is an automatic transfer switch. This can take two power sources (A and B) - two UPS, two mains supplies, or a combination and power up to 8 x 10A ports. Should one of the power sources fail, the other automatically takes over.

A further consideration for UPS used in patient care is the need to install the UPS with a galvanically isolating transformer. This will completely isolate the patient equipment from the mains supply to protect both from earth leakage and short circuit currents. The installation forms an isolated power supply. For Dialog Plus or Dialog Dual isolation is provided by an externally housed transformer. The MRMX series of the Multi Dialog UPS has been designed specially for the protection of operating theatres recovery rooms and houses its transformer inside the UPS itself.

For added security, this type of UPS is normally installed with two additional accessories:

•  An external maintenance bypass
•  Remote UPS monitoring software
