Selecting UPS For SOHO - Small Office and Home Office Applications
Power protection technologies range from simple filters to solutions such as an Uninterruptible Power Supply. For SOHO - small office and home office applications a line interactive UPS is normally recommended with a small battery runtime.
Line Interactive UPS
There are a number of applications in a small offices and domestic environments that can benefit from the power protection that an uninterruptible power supply can provide. These include computer systems, modems, firewalls, home cinema and hi-fis. These generally require some form of surge and over voltage protection when the mains is present and short duration battery support.
The Riello UPS range includes two ideal UPS products for domestic and small office environments - Plug Dialog and Win Dialog Plus. Both are line interactive UPS and use filters to suppress spikes and transients, and electrical noise that may be present on the incoming mains supply. A built in automatic voltage stabiliser provides protection from sags, brownouts and surges and the output voltage tracks the input mains voltage unless the inverter is activated. The inverter produces a pseudo sinewave supply from an internal battery set. There is a small break during transfer of typically less than 4mS.
For both UPS the typical runtime will be up to 16 minutes (load dependent). For longer runtime autonomies (or larger loads) a more sophisticated UPS such as the Dialog Active line interactive or the Dialog Plus on-line system must be considered.
Plug Dialog is designed to site on the desk top or can be wall mounted and is available in two sizes 400VA and 550VA. The UPS has four domestic style sockets. In the UK these are the 3-square pin type and elsewhere in Europe they can be French (2P+T) or Schuko. All four sockets provide mains filtering and surge protection but only three will actually provide battery power when the mains fails. This allows the user to protect sensitive equipment when mains is present but keep only critical items powered during power failures.
An LED display provides visual information on the operating status of the UPS. An audible alarm is sounded when the UPS operates on battery or approaches its low battery charge limit. The UPS has one USB port for remote monitoring. UPS management and control software is available for download from the Riello UPS website www.ups-technet.com. Other features include:
- integrated protection for a local telephone/model line from surge voltages (RJ11/45 connectors)
- cold start capability: the UPS can power up without a mains supply present
- user replaceable batteries
- load short circuit protection
- auto restart after battery discharge when mains returns
- GS/TÜV marks
Plug Dialog is supplied with a mains input cable and a telephone/modem interface cable.
In contrast the Win Dialog Plus is available in 400VA, 550VA and 650VA model sizes. The UPS is slightly smaller as it uses IEC 320 type sockets to power connected loads. The two sockets are mounted on the rear of the unit which also houses the built-in telephone/modem line interface and 'D' 9Way interface port for RS232 communications.
WP series models are supplied with two load connection cables and a telephone/modem interface cable. For mains power, the UPS uses the mains input cable from one of the loads to be protected. The UPS is also supplied with PowerShield² UPS management and control software on a CD-ROM. The WD series model - 400VA - has no 'D' 9Way interface port and is an entry level model.
Win Dialog Plus has a similar LED based front panel and an audible alarm. The front panel pushbutton can be used to instigate a battery test. Both the UPS and PowerShield² UPS management and control software are Microsoft certified.
